Signaling by neurotrophic factors is among the signals that have been identified to play critical roles controlling cellular physiology, organogenesis and nervous system development. This signaling involves the activation of receptors with intrinsic tyrosine kinase activity. Signaling by receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) requires a counterbalance by negative signaling events to ensure that appropriate thresholds of receptor signals are achieved and maintained for specific time-periods.

Our group investigates novel signaling mechanisms and physiological functions through which neurotrophic factors (GDNF, Neurotrophins) and their receptors regulate nervous system development. In addition, we are interested in understanding the physiological significance and the molecular mechanisms through which a novel family of transmembrane proteins containing leucine-rich repeats and Ig domains (LRRIgs) modulate the activation of trophic factor receptors in neuronal progenitors, glial cells and mature neurons. To achieve this, we use microarray technology, cellular, molecular and biochemical techniques, and in vivo models in transgenic mice.
Undoubtedly, our ability to develop efficient therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative diseases and neurological disorders will greatly depend on how well we understood the principles that govern the development of the vertebrate nervous system. Thus, our final goal is to understand the mechanisms underlying the development of the nervous system, and thereby contribute to improve our knowledge and the therapeutic treatment of the diseases that affect it.
